Tired Of Oily Skin, Acne or Blackheads? Smear Oil All Over Your Face!

oilsEver since I turned 13, my skin lost its peachy poreless texture that all kids seem to have, and decided to become not so peachy. Part of it is my genetics, part of it was puberty, part of it was my diet, but a huge part of it was the automatic response of wanting to fight against sebum, pimples and blackheads. All we see in TV commercials are oil-fighting products, skin-peeling agents and anti-bacterial soaps when it comes to the suggested “cures” for oily, blackhead and acne prone skin. Not to mention all the cosmetic products being recommended to hide (block) those pores. But like many health issues we’re collectively facing, we’re approaching this skin condition backwards. You’re skin doesn’t need to be fought against, no matter what its condition is. Learning to WORK WITH your skin, not fight against it, will make all the difference. 

If you’ve been struggling with oily, blackhead and/or acne prone skin for long, the mere thought of smearing oil all over your face may sound counterproductive. But a key thing to understand is that your skin actually produces oil because it NEEDS it to stay moisturized and healthy. Your body wouldn’t be naturally designed to produce a detrimental substance would it? Sure, some produce more oil than others, which can be bothersome, but it doesn’t change the fact that your skin wouldn’t be producing oil if it didn’t need it.

So what do you think happens when we strip our skin from its natural oils? It tries to compensate by producing more oil, which is often blocked from being released by all the tight and dried up skin caused by harsh chemical-based “acne-fighting” products. Perfect environment for the development of clogged pores, oily skin and pimples.

Instead of making your skin all confused, try nurturing it. Your skin thinks it needs more oil? Don’t take it away, give it some more! The basic concept of this approach is that the oil used to massage your skin will dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and clogged your pores and treat dry areas, all while “reassuring” your skin that it doesn’t need to over-produce oil.

The Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)

STEP 1. Choose your oil. I personally use coconut oil and it works great, but I have stumbled upon a website that suggests cleansing oils by skin type. Click HERE to check them out! (Avoid mineral oil) It is also recommended to mix castor oil with the oil of our choice.

Some suggestions in creating your blend of deep cleansing oil:

Oily Skin: Try a blend of 30% Castor Oil to 70% carrier Oil. Balanced Skin: Try a blend of 20% Castor Oil to 80% carrier Oil. Dry Skin: Try a blend of 10% Castor Oil to 90% carrier Oil.

STEP 2. Boil some water in a pot.

STEP 3. Apply the oil to your dry face and massage it into your skin in a circular motion for 1 to 5 minutes. Take your time on problem areas where blackheads tend to form (forehead, chin, and nose).

STEP 4. Now is the time to steam your face. Make a tent over your head with a towel and hang your head over the pot (not too close) for about 5 minutes. This will allow the oils to go deeper into your pores to dissolve impurities and hardened sebum. It also enhances the skin’s receptivity to the oil’s nutrients. You can also soak a washcloth in very warm water and apply it directly over your oily face. This is the most popular method, however I personally prefer the pot method. Choose what is more enjoyable for you.

STEP 5. (optional) When you are done steaming your face, massage your now steamed, oily skin again for another 5-10 seconds to work out any impurities from your pores. Steam again and repeat the process if you wish.

STEP 6. Remove the excess oil by scrubbing your face with a warm wet towel.

STEP 7. Close up your pores by splashing your face with cold water.

Your skin should now feel clean and smooth with no tightness at all! If any tightness is experienced, simply add a drop of the same oil to your face or apply your favorite natural moisturizer.

All the best remedies out there are the result of simply listening to the body. It will tell you what it needs and one thing is for sure: it doesn’t require a fight against nature, just work with it!
